Annotating Linguistic Reference in the New Testament
At BibleTech:2009, a presentation on Organizing the People, Places, and Things in the Bible described a semantic database of named entities in the biblical text. This talk describes how that data has been extended to cover other types of linguistic mention in the New Testament — descriptive phrases, pronouns, verbs with unexpressed subjects, and other referring expressions that aren't names — providing a more comprehensive semantic index to individual people, places, and things. It covers how the Greek New Testament was semantically annotated to build the database, how syntactic structure supports constructing semantic representations, the criteria and process used for annotation, and how this data can enrich search and discovery in Logos Bible Software.
